Mike Sorrentino Indicted For Tax Evasion
Remember Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino from “Jersey Shore”? Well, things are not looking too good for him. Since his time on the hit MTV reality series, he’s now in serious legal trouble. In fact, the “Jersey Shore” alum and his brother and manager, Marc Sorrentino were indicted yesterday for failing to pay taxes on $8.9 million and could face prison time if convicted.
The brothers appeared in a New Jersey court yesterday and proceeded to plead not guilty to all counts. Following that, the bail was set at $250,000. They will both be arraigned on October 6th. So, what exactly happened here? Allegedly, the Sorrentino men conspired to fail to pay federal income tax owed on income that Mike earned for “promotional activities” between 2010 and 2012. Apparently the tax they attempted to pay was received by companies that he and his brother controlled. Besides this, Mike was also charged with one count for allegedly failing to file his 2011 tax returned.
Together, though, Mike and Marc were charged with one count of conspiring to defraud the U.S. government. If found guilty, they can receive a maximum penalty of five years in jail and a $250,000 fine. They were also each charged with two and three counts of filing false personal tax returns. These counts would equal a maximum punishment of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine, if once again found guilty. The Situation’s attorney, Richard J. Sapinski, commented on the matter, saying “Michael denies the charges and believes that when all the facts come out it will be clear that he did not criminally violate the tax laws.”indictment also alleges that Mike and his brother claimed more than $5,104,000 in “false” or “inflated” business expenses, which included luxury cars, high-end clothes and “personal grooming expenses.”
I would say I am surprised by all the legal trouble The Situation is finding himself in nowadays, but I’m not. At all. I think every one of us could have predicted this from a mile away after watching just one episode of “Jersey Shore”.
