Former American Idol Finalist Michael Johns Passes Away at Age 35
Today, I have some sad news to report to my readers. If you watched season 7 of “American Idol”, there is a good chance you were familiar with the contestant Michael Johns. Unfortunately, the eighth place finalist passed away on Friday at the age of 35. The cause of death is a blood clot stemming from an ankle injury. His manager confirmed the tragedy on Twitter, writing, “It is with a heavy heart and inconsolable sadness that we confirm the passing of our friend Michael Johns. No other details will b avail at this time. Please respect the privacy of Mike’s family and friends as we know u will.”
According to Torrey Gimbill, a close friend of Johns, the singer was complaining for days about pains in his legs. That’s when his mom took him into the emergency room to see what exactly was going on. Johns had figured it was a blood clot, as the injury was bruising pretty badly, even though he hadn’t even hurt his leg at all. Following the news of Johns’ death, Idol alumni from all different seasons expressed their deep sorrow over the news, including Kris Allen, Taylor Hicks, Melinda Doolittle, Carly Smithson, and David Archuleta. Johns is the first finalist from the reality competition show to pass away in over 13 seasons.
After his time on “American Idol”, Johns went on to record his own album titled “Hold Back My Heart”, which came out in 2009. That record featured the popular number, “Heart on My Sleeve”. He also sang in a duet on fellow season 7 contestant Brooke White’s album, “High Hopes & Heartbreak”. In fact, right before his death, he posted a message to his followers on Twitter that he was gearing up to release more great music.
As a huge fan of “American Idol”, who followed season 7 religiously, this news has come as a bit of a shock to me. Johns was so unbelievably talented and there is no doubt that he will be missed. RIP Michael Johns.
