Angelina Jolie Makes Brave Decision to Remove Ovaries and Fallopian Tubes
Recently, Angelina Jolie made the brave decision to have both her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed out of her body. This was done as part of a preventative measure and detailed in an op-ed she did for The New York Times. In her op-ed, which was titled “Diary of a Surgery”, Jolie talked about the surgery she went through and why she made the decision that she did.
Jolie explained that she felt removing her ovaries and fallopian tubes was crucial so she could prevent developing ovarian cancer later on. The actress discussed that she actually carries a gene that gave her a 50 percent risk of coming down with this type of cancer. However, the move was prompted when she received a phone call from her doctor a couple of weeks ago after the results came in from a blood test. The test showed markers that could be a sign of early cancer.
The actress wrote, “I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt. I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn’t live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren.” She went on to say that she “had been planning this for some time,” as “it is a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe. It puts a woman into forced menopause. So I was readying myself physically and emotionally, discussing options with doctors, researching alternative medicine, and mapping my hormones for estrogen or progesterone replacement.”
Jolie concluded in her op-ed that, “it is not easy to make these decisions. But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.” I can’t imagine having to make a decision this big and scary, but it’s clear Jolie thought long and hard about what she was doing ahead of time. Now that it’s done, she can focus on enjoying her life with those she loves.
